One splendid place in the Western Egypt is
the Siwa Oasis, situated at about 350 miles from the Cairo's
West. This small oasis has a unique atmosphere and is visited
the most in the period from October to April, a period when the
nights` temperatures can be very low. The Siwa oasis played an
important role in the Egypt's ancient history, being visited by
Alexander the Great. There are numerous things to see in this
oasis: the remains of the Shali, an old fortress from the top of
which you can admire the whole oasis, the Temple of Amun, the
Bedouin's villages, the Hill of the Dead with its tombs dating
from the Roman era and containing some mummies` remains, the
Cleopatra’s bath, the Roman ruins, tumbledown ruins, hot
springs, salt lakes and so on. If you wonder about the
accommodation in the Siwa Oasis, then you don't have to worry,
there are eco hotels with beautiful gardens, restaurants and
lovely rooms. You should get enough cash with you because there
are no banks in Siwa. You can explore this wonderful oasis by
car, by bike, or by a dunk which can be hired from the locals.
From the Siwa oasis you can go to the Sahara Oasis, which is at
8 hours distance, by car. You can also go to the Great Sand Sea,
another interesting place. There are some rules that you have to
follow in the Siwa oasis, since that place is a traditional
society: it is not recommended to wear brief tops, bikinis and
shorts; the body must be covered, the women is indicated to have
their upper arms covered and if they want to take a bath in a
public bath, they have to wear a bathing suite from one piece
and a long shirt. |
