Situated in the central Egypt, more
precisely in the Libyan Desert, in the Alexandria South West,
Baharyia is a beautiful oasis, surrounded by hills. The main
village in Baharyia is El Bawiti and the mined of iron ore of
this oases represents the Egypt's principal source of steel and
iron. In Baharyia numerous fruits and cereals are cultivated,
such as: apricots, dates, grapes, olives, oranges, rice and
wheat. One interesting fact about the Baharyia Oasis is that
here were found remains of a dinosaur. And other fascinating
thing, especially for those interested in mummies, is that in
1999, at 5 square kilometers inside the oasis was discovered a
Greco-Roman cemetery old of 200o years full of thousands of
mummies. Many of these mummies were adorned with precious
metals. Now, the site is called the Valley of the Golden
Mummies. As regarding the Baharyia transportation, the oases is
connected with the Farafra oasis, with the Mediterranean coast
and with the Nile valley through many caravan routes. To get to
the Baharyia you can take a collective cab, a shuttle bus or
your own car, especially if it is a 4x4 car. If you intend to
travel to Alexandria and then to make a trip to Baharyia, you
can go with one of the organized trips or you can take the
railway from Alexandria to Cairo which has a station close to
Baharyia. Another method is to take the buses from Alexandria to
Baharyia, which are twice a day and the trip last 6 hours. There
are also local taxi which can be taken from Alexandria and cars
for rent; you can choose to rent a car that has the next ride:
