Today, the agriculture is the
principal activity in Siwa. The olives and the dates are the
most cultivated fruits. The olive trees and the palm trees
produce massive quantities of fruits; one of the most popular
products that is used in Egypt and also exported to the entire
Europe is the extra virgin olive oil made in Siwa. Since the
Siwa's agriculture is chemical free, there are opportunities for
those who cultivate organic products. The framers of Siwa are
sustained trough different programs, especially financial ones.
More, there in Siwa was built a center that has as activity the
olives` harvest. This center respects the standards of the
international marketing. Another financial program will supply
cattle for the oasis` animal wealth. The biogas digesters will
be the new source of energy in Siwa. The biogas can be used in
lightening and cooking and the organic compost of high-quality
will be produced by the digesters. In present, the low-grade
manure is imported from Marsa Matrouh which is not at all an
advantage since Matrouh is situated at 300 km away and the costs
are high. The agricultural land of Siwa has gardens carefully
kept and with complex drainage and watering systems; these
systems are in connection with a natural spring. The salination
in Siwa can be prevent by the drainage's management and by the
irrigation's judicious use. These measures will also allow the
good topsoil` s gradual development; in Siwa each garden is a
symbol of many generations` effort as well as the symbol of a
commune investment of effort and time. One of the most
impressive gardens in Siwa has a 100 meters diameter and lies in
the centre of a salt lake. Its access is possible through a
narrow footpath that has a 300 meters length. |
