The Feiran Oasis is situated
between Saint Katherine`s Monastery and The Gulf of Suez and is
also called the Pearl of Sinai. This oasis stretches for over 5
kilometers, being the Sinai`s largest oasis. The Feiran Oasis is
also among the earliest Christians centers that appeared in
Sinai. The legend says that Moses with his followers were in
this oasis; more, Moses turned a rock into a spring to give
water to his people who were thirsty. The supposed rock is
situated at the oasis` Western entrance. The fact that the
Feiran Oasis played an important religious role through the
history is proven by the ruins of numerous churches that date
from antiquity. During the 4th century AD Feiran was on the
point of becoming an important religious center. An important
religious tourist attraction is the Seven Girls Monastery which
was constructed in the 4th century in the oasis` middle between
the palm trees. The remains of an antique archbishopric also can
be seen and from the top of the Gebel Tehuna the view of the
oasis is wonderful. The Wadi Feiran is another significant
tourist attraction being not only the largest wadi of Sinai but
also the most important wadi as archeology. Numerous tourists
and pilgrims come to this wadi and describe their walk here as a
trip through history. More, Bedouins from many regions come here
every year. The present Feiran Oasis has over 30.000 palm trees,
and the center of the oasis stretches on 4 kilometers. At the
Gebel Serbal`s foot grows numerous types of wild flowers, lemon
trees and orange trees. The atmosphere in the Feiran Oasis`
valley is a paradisiacal and full of mystery one due to the huge
cliffs that are on the oasis` edges. |
