Egypt is a very touristic place
which attracts a large number of tourists for its pyramids,
pharaohs, temples and ruins. But the beaches of Egypt also
attracts the tourists, there is around Egypt a large number of
small and larger islands that attracts load of travellers. Some
of the islands of Egypt are: Green Island, Abatos, Nelson’s
Island, Pharaoh’s Island, Elephantine, Mukawwa Island, Kitchener
Island, Bigeh, Sehel Island. Abatos was a rocky island near
Philae in the Nile also known as Abaton where only the Egyptian
priests were allowed to enter. Green Island is an artificial
island in the Red Sea which is fifty meters wide and one hundred
and forty five meters long. The green Island was a fortress
built by the British forces during the World War II. Bigeh is in
the Nile River close to the Philae Island and was sacred to the
ancient Egyptian. It was believed that Osiris was buried on the
island. The fortification of Bigeh Island controlled the access
to Nubia. The Pharaoh’s Island is in the northern Gulf of Aqaba.
Crusaders who were defending Aqaba built in the twelfth century
a citadel on the island and called it Ile de Graye. Kitchener’s
Island is a small island in the Nile at Aswan. It was named so
because the island was given to Lord Kitchener to thank him for
his services in Sudan Campaign. |
